If the employees are well taken off, they'll take care of the customer and the customer will come back and he'll tell all his friends and family as well. Make this one of the core values of your company and your competitors won't know what hit them since this is not an easy thing to copy, it takes years to inculcate. The way to build this into the culture is to make pay for managers dependent not just on profitability and customer satisfaction but also on employee satisfaction.
