to me this means do something that you are passionate about, something that leads you to another place, and be deliberate about it. if you do this passionately and clearly, eventually someone will follow you and become a true fan. another person will see that and follow you. only if you are clear and focused and deliberate. soon enough, you will get other people following you. then you'll have a critical mass of true fans. true fans are different from ordinary people. because ordinary people are fickle. they'll love you one day and drop you the next.
you want to acquire true fans. because true fans are reliable. true fans will stand by you, in tough times and in good times. that's what you need in life. that's what everybody and every brand needs in life. true fans. true fans take time to acquire, because they want to see that you are in it for the long haul. but they are worth it. they are worth every second of the time that they spend engaging with you or with your brand. drip, drip, drip, they grow. and when they grow, you grow, and your brand grows. so do you.
